Brain Waves

We have seen more about thoughts and how thoughts are very powerful enough to affect a person's mind and the body.

We know that thoughts originates from the mind or the brain. The Brain is the most complex organ of a Human body.  Neurons within the brain communicate with each other by neurotransmitters. Let us see the different levels of brain waves and how we can measure them :

  • Gamma - These waves are of the range 25 - 100 Hz. These are the fastest brain waves. These waves are produced by the brain when a person is intensely focused on solving a particular task.

  • Beta - These waves are of the range 12.5 - 30 Hz. These are high frequency brain waves. These waves are produced by the brain when the person is doing some mental activity.

  • Alpha - These waves are of the range 7.5 - 12.5 Hz. These fall in the middle of the brain wave spectrum. These waves are produced when the person is not focusing too much on any activity and is in a relaxed state.

  • Theta - These waves are of the range 4 - 7 Hz. These are slow brain waves. These waves are produced when the person is in a meditative state.

  • Delta - These waves are of the range 0.5 - 4 Hz. These are the slowest brain waves. These waves are found in infants and babies. This could be one of the reason why babies smile even before 2 months of age in their sleep state. It could be that the babies would be tapping to their subconscious mind in their sleep state which contains previous experiences of a past life.

EEG which is Electroencephalogram is a test which is used to detect the electrical activity taking place in the brain. This test is done by connecting electrodes to the scalp of the person and recording the electrical activities over a period of time in the brain by using a computer software. An EEG measures and records the Brain waves mentioned above. Usually, patients who have experienced brain stroke, brain damage etc undergoes the EEG test as per the doctor's recommendation to understand the pattern of brain functionality. However, EEG test is also conducted during research purposes to understand the brain wave patterns of a person who regularly practices Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation etc.
